Reza Nouraei (@LarynxUK), Consultant Laryngologist and Tracheal Surgeon, The Robert White Centre for Airway, Voice and Swallowing, Poole General Hospital, England.

Reza studied at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge and graduated with degrees in Physiology and Medicine.  He trained in academic Otolaryngology and published, inter alia, over 40 peer-reviewed publications in Laryngology, obtained a PhD on surgical innovation and outcomes measurement in adult laryngotracheal stenosis, and co-edited a reference textbook (Laryngeal & Tracheobronchial Stenosis) whilst training.  He helped develop open and endoscopic operations for managing laryngotracheal stenosis, including for idiopathic subglottic stenosis and ‘lambdoid’ tracheal stenosis.

He took up a fellowship in New Zealand and then worked as a Locum Consultant Laryngologist in Auckland.  There he helped introduce endoscopic surgery for idiopathic subglottic stenosis, co-developed a new procedure for inter-arytenoid scarring, and helped create new physiology to characterise the multifactorial causes of exertional dyspnoea in laryngotracheal stenosis.

In 2014, Patel and Nouraei described Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE), which has since been used extensively in managing difficult airways, and is being increasingly adopted for tubeless microlaryngeal surgery.

Reza’s other main interest is in health informatics and use of healthcare big data to improve clinical outcomes.  Most recently he has been developing Lean-inspired Bayesian processes to allow efficient and patient-centred one-stop 2-week-wait care pathways.

Between 2008 and 2012 he was a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology’s Airway and Swallowing Committee, and he is currently a member of the European Laryngological Society’s Committee on Laryngotracheal Stenosis.
