After completing my undergraduate studies and MD in Cardiff, I moved to London in 1988 as registrar to the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital. My post-graduate training was in London, South Africa, Australia and the US. I was accredited as an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon in 1992 and was appointed ENT surgeon to St Mary’s Hospital, London in 1994.
I have a national and international reputation in Thyroid and Robotic surgery. I am the pioneer of Robotic Head & Neck Surgery in the UK. I performed the first UK robotic assisted Thyroidectomy and Oropharyngeal resection for cancer. I was the first surgeon in the world to perform robotic assisted Parathyroidectomy. I was also the first UK surgeon to routinely adopt laryngeal nerve monitoring for thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
I have over 200 peer-reviewed publications. I have supervised 7 MSc, 3 MD and 6 PhD students. I have co-authored several international guideline papers and contributed to the 2018 International Neural Monitoring Group Guideline.
I have held several appointments on regional and national committees and I am on the executive of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. I have previously been ENT lead for education in North Thames and have recently been elected to the SAC in Otolaryngology.
In 2016 I was conferred Professor at Imperial College London.
