Appointed Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1995, after 3 years as a consultant at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Past presidencies include: British Laryngological Association; Laryngology and Rhinology section of the RSM; ORS; Edinburgh Harveian Society.
Clinical interests: voice and swallow including TNO and local anaesthetic laryngeal interventions; rhinology; persistent physical symptoms
Research interests focus on the upper aerodigestive tract including dysphagia, snoring, putative relevance of reflux disease and upper airway innate immunity.
Supervisor of 15 completed doctorates, 2 in progress. Author of 225 scientific papers.
Chief Investigator of two NIHR funded national trials- adult tonsillectomy (www.NATTINA.com) and the effect of proton pump inhibitors in persistent throat symptoms. (www.TOPPITS.co.uk).
