I am a consultant anaesthetist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK with a specialist interest is difficult airway management. I am the clinical lead for airway management at the Trust and a committee member of the Difficult Airway Society (DAS).

In addition to this I am the education lead for the Advanced Airway fellowship at Guy's Hospital and we regularly produce work which is presented at national and international meetings and published in peer reviewed journals.

Over the years I have gained a vast amount of experience in advanced airway techniques, including awake tracheal intubation, videolaryngoscopy, apnoeic oxygenation techniques and surgical airways.

I have also developed an interest in improving airway assessment and have pioneered the use of Virtual Endoscopy in assessment of the difficult airway, on which I am regarded as an international expert.

I am regularly invited to talk at meetings both nationally and internationally on my areas of expertise.

I have also contributed to many anaesthesia textbooks, including a BMA award winning difficult airway book and have over 20 airway-related peer reviewed publications, including the 2015 DAS intubation guidelines, of which I am a co-author. I currently have over 500 citations.

I am chairing a group commissioned by DAS to develop guidelines on awake tracheal intubations which aim to launch and publish in early 2019. As a result of this we hope to provide an evidence based best practice guidelines on performing awake tracheal intubations, these will be the first of their kind.
